Yellow shoes for Mother of the Groom

Being the mother of the groom is a wonderful experience but the role comes with so much pressure to look your very best. Having a designer to help you make decisions and style your look can make all the difference. Inspiration comes to me from many different places – sometimes through research but often through a special moment and this is what happened when Agnieszka contacted me about her mother of the groom outfit.

People tend to think they can only call on a designer to have a whole outfit made but this just isn’t true. Agnieszka had already bought a pretty silk organza dress in navy with white polka dots. It had a full calf length skirt with 1950’s styling – but it was sleeveless. She was looking for a light weight jacket/ cardigan style top in navy to cover her arms. Agnieszka also bought along a pair of navy suede shoes that she planned to wear with the dress to show me. These had a low 1920’s shape heel and an ankle strap and I told her that I loved them. If I hadn’t said this she might not have told me that she had bought the same shoes in yellow suede as well.

This was a turning point in the styling of Agnieszka’s mother of the groom outfit. I quizzed her about the yellow shoes and suggested giving her traditional outfit some zing with yellow shoes and a yellow tulle jacket.

To coordinate this with the dress, I suggested the yellow jacket should have navy appliqué detail and my signature hand beading in a mix of yellows, navy and pearls to bring in the polka dots. I then suggested she should come and see me the following week with her yellow shoes and that meanwhile I would source the tulle as we now had a plan.

The outfit evolved and I also made her a matching fascinator with a navy base covered with the yellow tulle and appliquéd with the same detail. We called the outfit ‘Yellow Shoes’. Agnieszka looked radiant at her son’s wedding and received many compliments on her choice of outfit.
