Take the stress out of what to wear for a special occasion

When an invitation arrives for a wedding, cocktail party or a day at the races usually the first thought is ‘What do I wear?’ Most of us worry about getting it right. But a carefully put together wardrobe of selected pieces that you love will make dressing for a special occasion a lot less stressful.

My advice is to invest in some classic, good quality pieces that you will always feel good in.

Here are my top tips for classic items that will ensure your special occasion wardrobe never lets you down:

1. Top of the list has to be the LBD (little black dress). Dressed up or down and worn with diamonds, pearls or chains, the LBD was originally conceived by Coco Chanel and should always be simple yet elegant. Teamed with beautiful shoes in any colour, this can be the starting point for so many different looks.

2. A Chanel style wool tweed jacket is also an essential. These jackets are ideal for weddings, Ascot, Henley and any event that is held outdoors as even in the summer months it can be chilly.

3. Floral and patterned dresses can be gorgeous and work well for garden parties, BBQs and overseas weddings. Polka dots and stripes are timeless – choose carefully and your dress will have staying power.

4. A dress coat is so useful and easy to wear. Opt for a plain colour and you can ring the changes with your accessories.

5. I am not a fan of wraps or pashminas because unless fixed with a brooch these can be very restrictive. Instead a short jacket in velvet or faux fur will complete an evening outfit.

If you are able to afford to have a couple of couture garments made my suggestion would be start with a black or navy cocktail dress and a Chanel style jacket. Going the couture route means you will be able to choose your fabric, have a great fit whatever your body shape – and reflect your personality in the styling.
