Why bridal handbags are on the up
There is a growing trend for brides to opt for a clutch or wrist bag. And whether you are having a traditional, boho or modern wedding a handbag is a great to have on hand.
True you won’t need keys, money or a notebook but every bride needs essentials such as lipstick, tissues and phone. And rather than expecting to hand these items to a bridesmaid or the Mother of the Bride it’s nice to have your own handbag.
If you have made a decision to carry a bag up the aisle, choose the style very carefully – a clutch bag can look elegant but if you plan to put it under your arm at any point check there are no crystals or studs that could pull or mark your dress. And a bag that snaps closed is more elegant than a zip fastener for your wedding day, but check it opens and closes easily.
When my brides want to carry a wedding bag I ask them what they want to put in it and design a bag to fit their essentials. One thing I always do is measure their mobile phone to make sure it will fit. A nice alternative to a clutch is a hand bag that can hang from your wrist which keeps your hands free.
I generally make my bride’s bag from the same fabric as their wedding dress. I am always influenced by the style of the dress – 1920’s, traditional or vintage, the theme should be carried through to complement not compete with your look. I also embellish my bags so that it features elements from the dress – may be a bow, pearl beading, crystals or handmade flowers. A bag can add a lovely touch to your wedding day look and is also a lovely keepsake.
If you are going to carry a bag here are a few wedding day essentials to consider carrying:
1. Clear nail varnish – useful to repair a chipped manicure or to stop a run in stockings.
2. Safety pins – just in case of a last minute repair.
3. Blister plasters – if you haven’t broken your shoes in enough to get through the day.
4. Mints – to freshen your breath… you will be kissing the groom and guests so this is important.
5. Hairpins – especially if it is a windy day. Spray with hairspray and let them dry before putting in your bag as this will help hold your hair more securely.
6. A dry-clean chalk stick – as emergency stain cover for your wedding dress.
You can always ask the chief bridesmaid or Mother of the Bride if they will carry some of the above for you so that your bag is light.
