Wedding capes to complete your winter look
As a regular exhibitor at the National Wedding Show I was pleased to be asked to display one of my wedding gowns in their Bridal Showcase next month. I emailed them photos of two dresses and they instantly replied asking to use my gown with a matching veil that creates a cape effect because capes are on trend this season for brides.
While trends will influence a brides choice of wedding dress there are also so many more personal influences to bear in mind.
Think about your usual style – classic, boho, rock chic, sporty… Also consider the theme of the wedding and venue: a country barn with vintage inspired decor; a far away sun-drenched beach; a traditional church or smart hotel, all warrant a different style of dress.
And don’t forget your fiancé, when you walk down the aisle it’s important to look like the woman he fell in love with…
That said the cape trend is not just a fickle fashion fad but a necessity with all the winter brides. November once a no-no for a wedding in this country, is now competing with summer weddings. Sometimes it’s because it’s impossible to book a venue, florist, photographer, makeup artist, who can be booked two years ahead in the spring/summer months. And even when you get your summer wedding there is no guaranteed sunshine.
Winter weddings are just as romantic and call for deep berry tones and candles. And there is something very special about the quality of the light if you get a sunny day.
I am making a Scottish Widows cape in ivory silk velvet for a November bride to match her slinky wedding dress that she would otherwise be shivering in certainly as she walks along a path through a forest from the country church to the celebrations venue. Elegantly warm, the cape will also work so well with the romantic country theme.
If you are having a winter wedding and would like a cape designed to go with your wedding dress, I will be at The National Wedding Show, Olympia from Friday 22nd September to Sunday 24th September – stand K80 next to the catwalk.

I am a bride planning on wearing a cape as part of my outfit. What is the etiquette for arrival at the ceremony? Cape on or off?
We have just completed a bridal outfit with a cape for a church wedding. I have suggested that the bride should turn up at the church wearing the cape,(she will also be wearing a veil but not over her face) and ask her chief bridesmaid to remove it before she walks down the aisle. It can be handed to an usher to look after until the bride is ready to put it on to go outside into the winter weather and make her way to the celebration venue, our bride is walking along a forest path so she will certainly be pleased to have a layer over her wedding gown..
I hope this helps please forgive the delayed response, unfortunately your enquiry was missed. Elizabeth x
