Top 11 tips for commissioning a couture wedding dress
Some brides know that the only way to achieve their dream wedding dress is to go the couture route with a gown designed and made exclusively for them. Some trek round the bridal boutiques and then choose couture as they cannot find a ready made wedding dress to fit their vision.
Couture does demand commitment. But what should you expect from your chosen designer?
Here are my top 11 tips:
1. When choosing a couture designer recommendation is always the best option. If you do not know anyone who has used a designer, google instead but read testimonials carefully; and take distance to travel into consideration as you will need at least 5 fittings.
2. Visit a wedding show. I recommend Brides The Show at Olympia because you will meet a lot of designers under one roof. The next show is the 20th – 22nd September 2019.
3. Look for a designer who has sample dresses similar to what you have in your mind. If you are looking for a simple bias cut dress avoid designers who specialise in corseted dresses.
4. Importantly check their price range fits your budget – email ahead of a fitting so you know what you are getting into.
5. When you contact a designer to book a consultation ask if there is a charge, I offer a free no obligation consultation but not all designers do the same.
6. If you are working full time ask about weekend and or evening appointments because you won’t want to keep taking days off work for fittings.
7. Before attending the consultation write a list of questions and take someone you trust with you.
8. Have an idea of your budget and be honest with the designer. This is not a trick question they need to know so they can guide you in the right direction and not suggest fabrics or styles that are out of your price range.
9. Choose a designer that makes you feel comfortable; be sure they listen to your ideas, and that you feel confident to speak if you are not happy or need something explained.
10. Take the bra you will be wearing and your wedding shoes to each fitting. Or at least a bra that gives you the shape you want and a pair of shoes with the same heel height if you haven’t bought these items yet.
11. Lastly and most important of all give yourself plenty of time so you enjoy the experience and don’t feel pressured. You will cherish every moment of the experience if you pick the right designer.
