Special occasion photography – model for the day

It always surprises me how often fate directs life – the sliding door moments. Recently I attended a fundraiser dinner at the Bingham Hotel in Richmond for The Victoria Foundation, a charity I have supported for some time. I found myself sat at an interesting, fun table where I met photographer Vicki Sharp. She was taking photographs of the evening but all the ladies at our table recoiled and protested that they were not photogenic, including myself!

Vicki was not prepared to take no for an answer and began to direct us, giving us all sorts of clever tips, so as to get the best photos. One that has stayed with me was to curve forward a bit and lean on the table to look relaxed. I tend to sit bolt upright with shoulders back when a camera is pointed at me. Vicki specialises in photographing women particularly those who are uncomfortable in front of the camera and she asked if I would like a complimentary photo shoot.

Although nervous, I thought it might be lovely to be the model for a change.

The dress code for The Victoria Foundation dinner was smart casual. I wore an outfit that was inspired by a vintage lace collar I bought at Portobello Market many years ago. I designed a blush pink blouse with small black polka dots and added the collar and a feature vintage pearl brooch. A multi coloured cloque skirt and velvet shoes completed the look. My 1950’s hairstyle and eye makeup got a lot of attention including Vicki’s and she wanted me to recreate that look for the photo shoot.

Vicki arranged a date to come to my home with her camera, lights and backdrops. She glided in and took hardly any space. We chatted for a while so she could get to know me as an artist, designer, mother and woman she decided areas of my room would make the portrait more personal. Some were taken in front of a carved Indian screen that previously belonged to a very special friend. Others were taken by sculptures made by my son.

A few days later, I received around 50 shots and found it so hard to choose just a few as all were so good – Vicki had caught me exactly how I see myself.

I would recommend Vicki to anyone who would like a portrait, family photo or a wedding/event photographer. Throughout the shoot Vicki was getting to know me and helping me to relax, she discovered so much of my inner self and the two portraits I chose show just that. I often have conversations with brides and their mother’s as I create their outfits. Many dread the photos and worry about how to stand or pose. Vicki took away all my nerves and was very patient, a true professional.

Thank you The Victoria Foundation for sitting me on a table with such a talented lady.
