Planning for a wet summer wedding
If there is one thing you can be sure of it’s that the great British weather cannot be trusted even if it is your wedding day – and no matter how much you wish for sunshine there is no guarantee. You will probably be checking the forecast as your big day gets ever nearer and if you find out it’s going to rain, it’s time for action…
It will help if you already have a wet weather back up plan as this will make everything a lot less stressful. Umbrellas are a must and you can either ask guests to bring their own or there are companies that specialise in umbrellas for weddings and events. You probably don’t want to end up owning a hundred brollies so I suggest hiring these.
Companies such as Brolliesgalore have a range of wonderful options from transparent plastic, traditional wedding ivory and a host of funky patterns and colours. The umbrellas can be used as part of your wedding decor displayed in baskets or boxes – and you never know your guests may need them as sun shades.
Then there is your dress – if you are having a train make sure it has a hook, button or tie to lift it off the ground when walking through rain and mud.
Wedding wellies are very popular and are now a style statement coming in a range of bridal colours with bows and bobbles. And don’t forget to ask your make up artist to use waterproof makeup. Even if it doesn’t rain this is a good idea as you may well shed a tear.
Your photographer will need to be aware of your wet weather plans so they can investigate options, for example, there may be a folly, large tree or summer house that could offer shelter for some outdoor shots. If not it doesn’t normally rain all day so you may be able to take the photos when it clears.
Or just embrace the day, somehow rain adds something special to wedding photos – and don’t worry too much about your gown getting a little dirty, it can be dry cleaned afterwards.
If you are holding your event in a marquee although coconut matting is a cheaper option for the floor, it can get a bit soggy and be hard to walk on if it rains. A wooden floor is more practical – especially for the ladies in heels.
Rain and wind beating on a marquee can be really noisy so a sound system for the speeches is a must. And don’t worry about how your venue or caterers are going to cope. They are professionals and will seamlessly abort outdoor drinks and canapés and bring your guests in sooner.
The most important thing is don’t agonise too much about what you are going to do, or how you are going to cope with rain. Just make a plan and stick to it… It is your wedding day, have fun, you are marrying the one you love and nothing should detract from that… And with a bit of forward planning your wet summer wedding will be amazing.
