My 10 top tips for hot weather brides

If we listen to the experts, this summer is just the start of things to come. Many of my brides have struggled this year with wedding day temperatures of 30 degrees plus that have taken us all by surprise! If you are planning a wedding overseas you will have more idea of the expected temperatures, however many brides have been caught out this year at home and abroad as temperatures have soared.

So here are my top tips for summer brides:

1. Avoid corsets and boned bodices, layers of petticoats, long sleeves and heavy veils – these just don’t work when it’s hot, hot, hot!

2. Choose a dress made from silk or cotton – these fabrics breathe and won’t stick to your skin. However you will only get the benefit if the lining of your dress is also made from a natural fabric.

3. Unstructured shapes work best – go for a style that skims or drapes over the body… you will still look amazing but importantly you will be a lot more comfortable.

4. Avoid sleeves and instead wear a tiered veil – if you want shoulder coverage a two tier veil can be worn with the shorter layer draping over your shoulders and arms without restricting your movement.

5. Low cut armholes avoid underarm perspiration marks – even the best deodorants can let you down when temperatures rise. Underarm botox to stop excessive sweating is popular, but it can be expensive and you should always consult your GP first.

6. Avoid a long train – this will feel heavy in the heat unless it’s a lightweight fabric such as chiffon.

7. Low back dresses are great but think about your underwear – if you are having your dress made it is a good idea to find your bra first so the dress can be cut to cover it; or ask your designer to incorporate bra cups into the dress itself.

8. Carry a fan that compliments your dress – this is a practical way to keep cool and will act as a fun prop for the photos. I have made fans for some of my brides and they have loved the extra touch of glamour these bring.

9. Carry a white sunshade – a sun umbrella to protect you from the sun can be stylish and will ensure you stay cool.

10. Wear comfortable shoes – your feet will swell in the heat, maybe buy a half size bigger because you will be on your feet all day.
