Mother of the bride or mother of the groom – can you wear trousers?

Sometimes the lack of strict dress code for mother of the bride, mother of the groom or wedding guests can be confusing as now it’s the bride’s preference that dictates what everyone wears. It is important to remember it’s her special day and to take on board what she would like – especially if you are her mother or future mother in law.

Elizabeth Bessant Couture – Coat and Cigarette Pants

Wedding venues are varied and often very informal and you could easily look and feel out of place in a traditional mother of the bride outfit. Fields, barns and beaches are all regularly chosen for weddings and you may struggle in a fitted dress and heels.

If you are wearing a relaxed outfit, such as a trouser suit or a long flowing dress, wedge heels look great and getting around is a lot easier on uneven ground!

There is also the added bonus of comfort – especially when you are facing a 13 hour day of celebrations.

If you are one of those women who live in trousers, then a dressy version of your everyday look won’t take you too far out of your comfort zone. Either cigarette pants or wide leg trousers can work for occasion wear.

Cigarette pants look good with a dress-coat and wide leg trousers can be worn with a floaty top or a jacket depending on location and temperature.

Generally a jacket that is long enough to cover the derriere is most flattering.  And there are so many fabric options for dress trousers: silks, crepe, wool, and an amazing variety of manmade mixes often with a stretch component for comfort.

You need to be more adventurous with colour if you opt for trousers because black, navy and grey can look too formal unless you have a relaxed design.

If you want to stay neutral a pretty pale grey, nude or taupe can work. If you are thinking of going bright then I would suggest cigarette pants so you don’t stand out too much – and dominate the photos and the event! It’s her special day so let the bride be the focal point of everyone’s attention.
