Maxi dresses for special summer events
Summer is finally with us and that means beaches and holidays but also here in the UK parties, weddings and events. Summer dressing is a lot simpler and events tend to be more relaxed and casual so plan your outfit accordingly. If you are asked to a special summer event it is all too easy to overdress – instead think simple with a maxi dress.
Floaty floral or abstract silk chiffon prints create a beautiful diaphanous look for a special wedding or garden party with wedges or sandals.
Issy was invited to her cousin’s summer wedding at Newby Hall in Yorkshire, a beautiful country house with extensive grounds.
She decided she would like to wear a floaty silk chiffon maxi dress that would work from day to the evening dancing.
I found a beautiful silk chiffon in shades of aqua and purple.
Her dress was lined from above the knee with aqua stretch silk.
This allowed for the top layer of unstructured chiffon to float as Issy moved and danced.
She accessorised it with flat silver Grecian-style sandals and a silver clutch.
Issy treasures her dress that got so many compliments.
Maxi dresses suit all ages. Becki came to see me to have a maxi dress made to wear to her step daughter’s summer wedding set in their country garden with a marquee and bales of straw.
Observing wedding etiquette, Becki waited for all the other ladies in the bridal party to choose the colour of their outfit and only after the bridesmaids, mothers and grandmothers had made their decisions started to look around.
It was quite a challenge finding a colour that suited Becki that no one else was wearing.
I found a very fine Italian silk chiffon with a blossom print in shades of aqua, blush and coral. The fabric warranted a simple shape. I made a sleeveless wide scoop-neck dress that fitted under the bust and then floated as Becki moved.
A side split showed off the red silk lining when Becki walked or danced but the dress hung closed for the formal part of the wedding and the photos.
The following year Becki wore her dress again for a trip to the Royal Enclosure at Ascot and I made her a red hat embellished with my hand made flowers to compliment the print on the dress.
Maxi dresses are perfect for overseas weddings in hot climates.
When Judy’s son got married she did not want a traditional mother of the groom outfit – the wedding was in the Italian sunshine the dress code was relaxed.
I made her a circular silk chiffon maxi skirt in a contemporary print, geometric patterns in white, greens and black suited Judy’s style.
I made a black silk waistcoat and for the back used the silk of the skirt to create a coordinated look.
Judy felt relaxed and comfortable for what turned out to be a very warm day.
If you would like to add a summer maxi dress to your wardrobe it will be a very useful addition and there are so many beautiful fabric prints this seasons.
