Getting it right – Dressing for Christmas and New Year events
The Christmas season brings with it invitations to so many different events. But while the invite will state the dress code, planning your outfit can be tricky. Generally dress codes are self explanatory for men… but for us ladies getting it right is so much harder.
White Tie – This is the most formal of dress codes and not so common today. White tie requires ladies to wear a full-length formal evening dress and traditionally to show décolletage – but this is not essential. These occasions call for your finest jewellery and even a tiara, if you own one. Long gloves can be worn, but are not compulsory, with a sleeveless or cap-sleeved dress. If you plan to wear a dress with sleeves, no gloves are better than short gloves. For warmth while travelling to the event wearing an evening coat, cloak or wrap is a gorgeously glamorous finishing touch.
Black Tie – Today black tie is the most frequent dress code for formal wear at parties and balls. Generally a long evening dress or skirt is a good choice but if you prefer a short dress best it’s not too short. If there is a dinner avoid a voluminous gown as this will be in the way when you sit at the table. And while very tight dresses split to the thigh make for a stunning entrance, these are best kept for the red carpet, formal events call for more restraint! Evening trousers are acceptable but opt for a palazzo cut for a softer, yet sophisticated look. Fine or costume jewellery can be worn to add glamour – but no tiaras. An evening coat, jacket or wrap and an evening bag will complete your outfit.
Highland Dress – If you are invited to a New Years Eve party and Highland dress is stated as the dress code choose a long dress with a skirt full enough to dance reels. Traditionally this would have been a white dress with a tartan sash worn across the body but today ladies choose colours and patterns. And be aware – non clanswomen should not wear a sash.
Lounge Suits – For evening events, this means ladies should wear a smart day or cocktail dress. A jacket or wrap can be worn and if the event is more casual a good cardigan will be perfectly appropriate. And if you are attending a daytime event, a day dress, trouser or skirt suit are all suitable.
Smart Casual – A smart day dress with a jacket is a safe choice, or for a less formal look a cardigan can be worn. I would advise against wearing denim especially for Christmas and New Year events simply because it is not very festive. It is always nice to dress up and there is the rest of the year to wear your favourite denim.
