Finding a last minute wedding dress…
Imagine this: you have planned your special day, ordered the flowers, and chosen the dress of your dreams – only to find at the last minute that your wedding dress designer has gone out of business! Unfortunately in today’s economic climate this does happen all too often. And the stress of finding a new dress with just a few weeks to go can be overwhelming for a bride-to-be, spoiling what should be such a special time in your life.
Brides are advised to take out wedding insurance which will help recoup costs. And as long as you pay any deposits with a credit card you will be covered in the event of goods or services not being supplied.
However this does not cover the repercussions that may result if you find that a month before your wedding you are faced with having to find a last minute couture wedding dress designer.
Over the last 20 years, maybe because I am based in London, I have met more and more women in this position.
Recently one of my lovely mother of the bride clients talked to me about her daughters dilemma.
With only three months to her wedding day, her daughter has been caught out twice: first the online company supplying her wedding shoes has gone out of business and now the same thing has happened to the designer who was making her wedding dress.
Shoes are not such a problem but to have no dress just months before your wedding is a real problem.
You can imagine how upset mother and daughter are feeling.
Every part of planning your wedding should be a happy experience that adds to your memories – for mother and daughter choosing the dress and going to fittings together is a big part of the build up. Most girls will only have a dress made for them once in their life so every step should be fun and exciting. To suddenly find half way through that the designer you trusted to create your dream dress has let you down is hard to accept. How do you move forward if you have no dress when most boutiques and designers are quoting six to nine months notice for a wedding dress!
All my wedding dresses are made in-house in my Wimbledon studio so I was able to be flexible and offer help to this mother and daughter.
However this is not the worst case I have come across.
When Cecelia came to me she had just six weeks to go to her wedding day. But with a lot of juggling and late nights – but no compromise on the quality of the dress – my team pulled together to make her the dress she wanted and when she walked down the aisle she had a fantastic response…
I get so much satisfaction from helping brides. And an advantage of having your dress made by a designer who is going to make the dress from start to finish in the UK is that they are more able to help in a crisis.
