Choosing a special outfit for an autumn/winter wedding

If you are invited to a Autumn/ Winter wedding in the U.K. finding an outfit that is both warm and stylish can be a challenge. Weddings at this time of year are becoming more popular with brides for many reasons: as well as the romance of winter with snow or autumn with it’s burnt orange leaves it can also lower costs for venue and services and greater availability. But while the bride can swathe herself in a romantic velvet cloak guests may find it harder to get the dress code right. You will need to plan for potentially cold, wet weather but you could be pleasantly surprised with a clear blue sky and sparkling sun. And in reality the gamble with the weather is the same all year round.

Here are my top 7 tips for finding the right outfit for a winter wedding:

1. If it is a one venue wedding, the bride will still probably want some outdoor photographs so you will still need to consider how you will keep warm while smiling for the camera. A dress coat that compliments your dress always looks smart and would traditionally be the garment of choice especially if you are mother of the bride or mother of the groom.

2. You could wear a fur jacket or stole especially if the wedding has a vintage vibe but real fur is not a good idea. So many people are against wearing fur and a wedding is not the place to be controversial. There are faux furs that look equally good and will keep you warm.

3. Choose dress gloves which come in many colours to match your accessories while adding style and warmth.

4. Tights are a must and a closed in shoe or an ankle boot because you may be standing around waiting to be called for photos. If you are wearing ankle boots don’t forget to take your dancing shoes for later.

5. If you are wearing a hat use a hat pin in case it is windy, fascinators on combs can be secured with 2 kirby grips crossed over the teeth of the comb, this also works for a fascinator on a band if you are worried it might move out of place.

6. If you want to wear a print opt for something with a darker background, a rich brocade or velvet is also lovely for an Autumn/Winter wedding.

7. And don’t forget the umbrellas either clear or a colour that compliments your outfit is fine but don’t take your everyday black telescopic brollie it will look so dull!
