Chic but unusual choice as Mother of the Bride or Mother of the Groom wear the same colour as bridesmaids
Choosing the colour of your outfit if you are Mother of the bride or Mother of the Groom is never straight forward. Generally the bride will choose her dress first and then decide on a colour for her bridesmaids. After that the Mother of the Bride and Mother of the Groom can think about the colour of their outfits which ideally should complement the rest of the bridal party.
A trend I have noticed over the last few years is the Mother of the Bride or Groom wearing the same colour as the bridesmaids. This works well if the style of your dress is very different from the bridesmaids so your role at the wedding is clear – otherwise you may be mistaken for the Matron of Honour.
I have also seen a trend towards Mother of the Bride wearing white or ivory to match their daughter’s wedding dress. This is to show the tight bond between mother and daughter – it tells the guests we are best friends.
When Karen came to see me she wanted to have her Mother of the Bride dress the same colour purple as the bridesmaid. I could understand the thinking behind this decision. There was only going to be one bridesmaid so to have her mother in the same colour would balance the photos.
I suggested Karen should wear a fascinator so it was clear she was Mother of the Bride and not Matron of Honour, she took my advice and looked effortlessly elegant alongside her daughter in the photos.
I am also currently designing a dress for another Mother of the bride and she is going to wear the same colour as the 11 bridesmaids – this is clearly a trend that is gaining in popularity.
My advice would be to only wear the same colour as the bridesmaids if it’s a shade that works for you. Other than that enjoy the special day your way.
