Be brave and choose a short wedding dress
When a bride starts her search for a wedding dress, it’s assumed she will be looking for a long dress and it takes courage to say no that is not me. Tradition still impacts on weddings and often when it comes to choosing a wedding dress most brides follow etiquette. But if you want a short dress don’t shy away as short can be very special and impactful.
When choosing your dress consider your personal style – if you rarely wear a dress you will probably feel more comfortable in a short dress. However if your groom is wanting to see you in a long dress at least let him know of your plans before hand especially if his heart is set on you wearing long. It is possible to compromise by opting for a short dress at the front with a floor length train at the back.
Leigh Anne came to see me to have her wedding dress made because she wanted a short dress that was long at the back with a train and couldn’t find one anywhere. The wedding was abroad in a country with a hot climate and she didn’t want a lot of clinging fabric around her legs. I made her a dress with a short front that showed off her red glittery shoes.
Another option is a short wedding dress with a long detachable overskirt. This is something I often make for my brides as a way of transforming their dress from day into evening. Although I find most of my brides end up keeping the overskirt on – but you will have the option to remove it.
The advantages of short or ballerina length dress are many. These dresses are usually more comfortable, and easier to move around in and dance, especially if you arranged a choreographed first dance. If you opt for a removable overskirt with a train it also means avoiding picking up dust as you walk and avoiding guests treading on it on the dance floor.
Claire decided to have a ballerina length dress for her country wedding in a barn. I made her a 1950’s style dress in duchess satin with a Chantilly lace bodice and sleeves. I decorated the wide belt at the front with her collection of Royal Dolton brooches. It was perfect for the first dance that was a choreographed rock n roll piece with a lot of swing. The style allowed Claire to be comfortable and to be free to enjoy her day.
