6 tips for coordinating shoes and bag with a special occasion outfit
There used to be a rule that your shoes and bag should be the same colour and finish – and preferably the same brand. Now those old rules have been shaken up and dressing with style now means showing flare and originality. Designer bags come in every colour possible, and this summer’s must have bags are yellow and orange.
With so much choice how do you coordinate your shoes and bag with your outfit? Here are my top tips:
1. Nude shoes with a coloured bag is a quirky and stylish look – nude shoes come in many shades and are very flattering.
2. If you are wearing a plain coloured outfit, add a pattered bag and choose shoes that pick out one of the colours in your bag.
3. A coloured bag and shoes work well with a plain or block-colour outfit. If you are wearing a patterned dress choose a colour from the pattern.
4. Black shoes are appropriate for a winter event or a black tie party teamed with a sparkly bag. My advice is to avoid black shoes for summer events and weddings.
5. Clutch bags are ideal when posing for photo if you are mother of the bride or mother of the groom, Hold the clutch in the palm of your hand with your elbow slightly bent for a relaxed pose. This will flatter your shape – and look good in the photos.
6. If you have to keep your bag with you all day choose a style with an optional shoulder chain, or a wrist handle. This is especially helpful for buffet events when balancing a glass in one hand and a canapé in the other is not easy.
Mother of the bride, Michele looks good in colour. I made her a fitted pink silk dress with a floaty silk chiffon coat. The chiffon was a mix of unusual colours – chartreuse, pinks, vermillion, clover, aqua and a touch of ivory worked into an abstract floral design.
Michele decided to pick out the chartreuse for her shoes. To coordinate her look, I trimmed her hat with the chiffon and brought the look together by making her a clutch bag from the pink silk of the dress. The bag featured a cluster of beading that picked out the colours from the coat.
Finding the right bag can be a struggle – a handmade bag is not only a practical answer but also a talking point and a little treasure to keep. Every bag is individually made to suit my clients event and outfit.
