Be the belle of the ball – whatever your age
I have had my head down with two big weddings this September and have hardly noticed the seasons change. Now I have time to pause, Autumn is definitely with us and with it the promise of winter events and Christmas Balls. For many years, I have supported The Victoria Foundation Winter Ball providing an outfit for their silent auction. The Victoria Foundation is a Richmond based medical charity with the overall aim of transforming lives – either through medical provision or by ensuring that those young people destined to become the future generations of doctors are not thwarted by financial restrictions.
This is a double challenge for me because not only do I have to design and make an outfit for the fundraising, I also have to think about what I will wear to this black tie event. I always wear a long dress as do most of the guests, it shows respect for the occasion and all the hard work that The Foundation have put into creating an amazing event where everyone will have a fabulous evening while continuing to fund the charity. Sadly in the past couple of years I have noticed some people are starting to wear cocktail length dresses which is a shame because a Christmas Ball is one of those rare occasions when sparkle, diamonds and glamour are de rigor.
Whatever your age, a black or navy evening dress is always a good starting point because you can reinvent it from year to year with different accessories. It could be classic diamonds, silver evening shoes and an elegant stole. Or you could add a pop of colour to your black or navy dress – bright pink shoes and a pink wrap or cashmere bolero is a fun statement especially if you like to be noticed.
A strapless dress could be worn with a lace evening jacket for arm coverage. Last year, I wore a sleeveless black lace dress and made myself a short sleeved black and bottle green brocade bolero with marquisate feature buttons to go with it. I accessorised with burgundy velvet shoes and a silver hairpiece I made to tie in with the buttons on the bolero. Balls are often held in large rooms and there is a chance you will be chilly, I kept the bolero on all evening and felt elegant and warm.
If you are planning to go to a ball this Christmas now is the time to start planning your outfit especially if you plan to go down the couture route. If you would like any advice email me at [email protected] for a free no obligation consultation.
