Customise your bridesmaids’ dresses for a look with Wow Factor

Brides are having increasing numbers of bridesmaids – often into double figures – which can take up a big chunk of the bridal budget. I have just completed 10 couture bridesmaids’ dresses for one of my brides and they all look absolutely amazing. Each young woman has had a custom-made pattern and on average four fittings so that each dress fits beautifully with the right neckline and length to show off each bridesmaid’s figure.

This has been a huge commitment not only financially for the bride’s parents but also for the young women attending all the fittings. I have also had to be very flexible with evening appointments as they all work full time. Shoes have been dyed to match the dresses, and earrings and hair decorations also coordinated to achieve a look that is elegant and cohesive. I am looking forward to attending the wedding to help the bride and her bridesmaids get ready, celebrate a very special day and also ensure they all look their best for the photographs.

That all sounds very exciting but what should you do if your budget simply doesn’t stretch to couture – and you want to make a statement. Customising a basic dress bought online or on the high street could be the answer. I have a bride who is having an amazing 15 bridesmaids. This is going to require serious budgeting skills.

I have suggested we work together: she will find the dresses with my guidance. I will then fit these to each bridesmaid and embellish with my hand cut appliqué and beading to achieve a couture look.

If you are good with a needle you could embellish your bridesmaids’ dresses yourself – but I would suggest having these professionally fitted before you start. Even the most beautiful embellishment won’t hide a badly fitting dress!
