Choosing the right accessories for your wedding day look
You have found your wedding dress the next step is choosing accessories. These are important as they provide the finishing touches. Your wedding dress is the star but the right accessories will elevate it to another level. There are so many things to consider shoes, veil, tiara, earrings, belt or sash the list goes on… But don’t overdo it.
If your wedding dress is embellished that will influence your choice of accessories. Crystals and pearls on an ivory dress generally look better with silver jewellery. A creamier ivory dress looks good accessorised with gold or rose gold to bring out the warm hues.
Remember less is more when it comes to styling, you don’t need a veil, dangly earrings a necklace and an elaborate belt or sash to create wow factor.
Take your lead from your dress. If it has an ornate neckline let that be the main feature and avoid a necklace that may look too busy instead wear gorgeous drop earrings. If your gown is a simple style a feature necklace and an ornate sash or belt will give the dress extra pizzazz.
To create an illusion of curves synch your waist in with a belt or sash, if you want a slimming effect keep the embellishments to the centre front.
How you wear your hair will influence your choice of earrings. If you are wearing it down stud earrings or drop earrings look lovely. However, if you are having an up do chandelier earrings work well.
Veils are a big part of bridal accessorising – again consider your dress and match the shade of the veil to it. There are so many veil options: a cathedral veil will elongate a petite frame and add drama especially to a dress that doesn’t have a train; a fingertip or elbow length veil will cut a petite bride in half but work beautifully on a taller bride. If your dress has a lot of back detail then make sure you show it off by choosing a one layer sheer veil. Elaborately decorated veils work better with simple wedding dresses. If you don’t want to wear a veil a birdcage fascinator is a stylish option, this works for everyone and can add retro style.
Natalie had already chosen her wedding dress when she came to see me. She felt the dress was too simple and asked if I would make her one of my heavily embellished sashes.
I hand beaded the centre front of her sash with a base of silver-lined bugle beads and overlaid this with assorted pearls and crystals.
The edges of the sash were decorated with a line of pearls to ensure all round interest.
Natalie loved her wedding dress choice but the belt personalised her look and made her look and feel really special.
