Styling a complete look for Mother of the Bride and Mother of the Groom

Being a Mother of the Bride or Mother of the Groom is just so exciting, but it’s so easy to feel overwhelmed by the decisions you will need to make about your outfit. The pressure shouldn’t be underestimated as the wedding day will be captured on camera at every stage.

The first step in the process is to find someone you can trust who will listen to your concerns and give you the right advice.

If you can afford to go to a designer for your outfit they will guide you through the whole process from the right underwear, your outfit shape, style and fabric and how to accessorise shoes, bag and jewellery.

I also advice my clients on hair and makeup, and how to hold a bag and stand for the photographs so you look your very best.

The theme of the wedding and the venue will dictate your outfit choice. You will also need to consider the colour theme for bridesmaids, flowers and the bride’s preferences.

If you are Mother of the Groom remember to avoid wearing the same colour as the Mother of the Bride.

A wedding outfit needs to look as good from the back as the front because for the ceremony your guests will be standing behind you. This is an outfit that needs to work hard as you will want it to look good from a distance but have features and detail that give interest close up. And importantly it needs to be comfortable as you are likely to be wearing it all day and late into the evening.

Makeup is important for the Mother of the Bride and Mother of the Groom – especially if you don’t normally wear makeup. A special occasion outfit needs to be enhanced with makeup. This doesn’t have to be heavy just enough to show your eyes, cheekbones and lips.

Avoid brightly coloured shimmery eye shadows, harsh eyeliner or lip gloss because these don’t work on older skin. If you decide to use a makeup artist have a trial make over and speak out if you are not happy. However bear in mind you will need a bit more than you would normally wear so your features show up in the photographs.

Hair is also another dilemma because most Mother of the Bride or Mother of the Groom will wear a hat or fascinator.

Hats work better with an up do but this can be soft: a chignon that takes the hair back into a knot, twist, pleat or bun is very flattering for most face shapes and works well with hats and fascinators.

However if you are not happy with an up do there are many options. I recommend thinking about how you would like to wear your hair before choosing a hat or fascinator.

Your designer or a good milliner will be able to advise. Your hairdresser will be happy to position your hat or fascinator on the day of the wedding but it would be a good idea to let them see it before hand.
