Pastels and florals are on trend for Mother of the bride in 2019

In the past the mother of the bride was expected to dress in matronly rather dull shades. Thankfully times have changed. Pastels are always beautiful for mother of the bride and trends this spring include dusty pinks through to pale lilac and rose. Duck egg blue is a perennial favourite and always looks lovely.

A floral patterned dress for mother of the bride can solve the issue of choosing just one colour. To work well you will need to select a fabric that picks out some of the colours of the wedding theme and blend or match with the colours of the bridesmaids’ dresses. But having so much choice can be overwhelming.

When Fiona came to see me to have her mother of the bride outfit made she wanted to co ordinate her outfit with the bridesmaids’ beautiful floral dresses in shades of blue. Her daughter was wearing a traditional ivory wedding dress for her country garden wedding. But the photos would have been too busy if Fiona had also worn a patterned fabric. I made her a duck egg blue silk/linen dress with pearl beading, a fitted jacket with silk bow detail, and finished the ensemble with a matching clutch bag and fascinator. Her outfit complimented the bridesmaids dresses, creating a harmonious look for the wedding party.

Fiona was confident she had made the right choice for her daughter’s wedding and was able to host the event feeling confident that she was perfectly dressed.

It is not easy to choose the right outfit when you know it’s so important to get it right. Here are my top tips to help with your search for the perfect mother of the bride outfit:

1. Take your cue from the bride regarding style, colour and level of formality. The bride and groom set the tone of their wedding, it could be a relaxed country affair or a formal black-tie event.

2. Traditionally the mother of the bride’s outfit should complement the wedding party colours but not necessarily match. My advice would be to wait until the colour of the bridesmaids’s dresses has been made – then look for a harmonising hue.

3. The venue, country and temperature will all determine your choice of outfit. If your daughter is having a church ceremony it would be respectful to wear a dress with sleeves, a jacket or dress coat. I don’t recommend wraps or pashminas as these tend to look rather untidy and are a problem if you are wearing a corsage.

4. Start looking for your outfit as early as possible – this will allow time to change your mind or have your outfit made. Remember the mother of the groom traditionally can’t choose her outfit colour until you have made a decision so allow her time to get it right.

5. It is important not to move too far from your comfort zone because it is a stressful day and you want to be able to relax, feel comfortable and enjoy the day.
