My top 6 tips for choosing the right bridal hairstyle
Finding your dream wedding dress is the first step to creating your wedding day look. But the right hair style is equally important because this will frame your face and create your wedding day look. The important thing to consider is not how much you love a hair style but whether it suits your face shape and works for your hair type – if your hair is poker straight it simply won’t hold ringlets all day. You will also want to take into account the style of your dress and theme of your wedding – traditional church wedding, boho wedding in a barn… each demands a different hair style.
When choosing your dress you will have consulted a wedding dress designer or visited a bridal boutique for advice, take the same care with your hair style and get advice from a hair stylist who specialises in wedding hair. Not all hair dressers are good with long hair or creating up-do’s so give yourself enough time to choose the right stylist. You also need to think about finding someone who is close to where you will be staying or prepared to travel to the venue. Make an appointment for a practise session to make sure you are happy – and allow enough time in case you want to look for a different stylist!
Here are my top tips for choosing your hairstyle:
1. High neck dress – the formality of a high neckline requires an up-do to add a regal feel. This will elongate your neck and show off your jaw line – and draw attention to any detail on the neckline of the dress.
2. V-neckline – wear your hair down in soft curls or beach waves to balance the low neckline.
3. Bateau neckline – think Megan, Duchess of Sussex, and go for a low relaxed bun. A high pony tail will compliment a 1950’s style or ballerina length wedding dress with this neckline.
4. Strapless dress – works well with an up-do but it doesn’t have to be formal, a windswept chignon is very popular at the moment and will add real glamour to your look.
5. One shoulder dress – this style will draw attention to your shoulders and your hair should be swept to the strapless side of the asymmetric neckline to create balance. For a boho style dress, try a side-swept fishtail braid.
6. Hair decorations – there are lots of options for decorating your hair if you are not wearing a veil: a traditional tiara, jewelled pins, or a fresh flower crown, whatever you choose make sure your hairstylist knows before your wedding day.
