Lace dresses, perfect for so many occasions

If you have been thinking that lace is just too girly maybe I can persuade you to think again…because it is easy to wear and can look lovely on woman of all ages.

There are no limits to the type of dress that works well made in lace as it can be sweet, tender, bridal, mature or sexy.

White lace is synonymous with purity, innocence and new beginnings hence its popularity with brides.

But lace dresses work well for mother of the bride or mother of the groom because you can wear these with a jacket for the formal part of the day but then are fun and great for dancing in the evening. And the added advantage of lace is that it does not crease.

Lace was invented in Chantilly, France in the 17th century, but it is now made around the world.

Today lace is manufactured in various ways and comes in a wide range of qualities, patterns and colours to suit all occasions.

So how do you choose the right type of lace for you?

HANDMADE LACE is rarely used for large scale items. It can be incorporated in a design to make a feature of the décolletage, neckline or cuffs. Irish lace is renowned for its high quality.

CROCHETED LACE is made by hand from thicker yarn. The result is less fine but very individual.

CHANTILLY LACE is one of the best known laces originating from the city with the same name.

It has a fine texture and a delicate appearance. Traditionally used for wedding dresses it is now available in many colours.

MACHINE MADE LACE is far more common and made using synthetic yarn. It often incorporates embroidery, beading and metallic thread.

The best lace to choose for everyday wear is machine made lace as these are usually harder wearing, whereas crocheted lace looks good for summer casual.

Handmade lace such as Chantilly is ideal for bridal or occasion wear and it will make you feel very special indeed.

This now comes in a huge range of colours and there are even printed laces.

Another way to individualise your lace dress is to have a lining in a contrasting colour.

Nude coloured lining under black lace is sexy but you can play with different options, for instance mauve lining under dark red lace, if you want a look that really catches the eye.

I always have lace dresses in my collection because they work for everyone.

A few years ago I made a beautiful royal blue lace dress for a lovely lady called Joy to wear to her 90th birthday celebrations at the Ritz.

Proof that you are never too old to wear (the right) lace dress!
