Couture creations – let your imagination run riot
The beauty of creating a couture outfit is that there are no rules – it is about designing for the occasion with the perfect fabric, colour and pattern or combination of materials. My clients personality is always the starting point for the design which makes each and every outfit unique.
Recently I designed an outfit for myself to wear to a late summer wedding. While sourcing fabric for clients, I fell in love with a chiffon print in an array of vibrant greens, lemons, pinks and clover. The pattern with an abundance of exotic cacti with vibrant blooms mixed with exotic parakeets was unusual – and as an artist suits my personality and the statement I want to make.
I decided to make my outfit as a two-piece so I could wear the tie neck long sleeve blouse and the gathered prairie length skirt separately for future events or as part of my daywear wardrobe. The cuffs are fastened with vintage buttons in green and yellow, some green tights and dark khaki suede shoes complete the look.
Buying things you love when you see them often pays off. My shoes were purchased on a trip to Paris earlier in the year with the wedding in mind. And then came the exciting part, creating the hat using sinemay, a straw fabric used for millinery. I always love making hats. I made the cacti blooms and plants in colours from the chiffon fabric used for my outfit. Yellow earrings were the only jewellery needed and a khaki bag completed the look.
My outfit though bold was extremely comfortable with the loose blouson style blouse synched in by an elasticated waist skirt. Everyone loved the vibrant colours and fun print and I received lots of compliments.
